Have you experienced complications with vaginal mesh implants?
Surgical mesh implants are frequently used to treat weakening in the pelvic region, a common problem after childbirth or a hysterectomy. Transvaginal mesh inserted surgically to treat pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which one of the pelvic organs slips from its regular location to press up against the vagina.
In the last three years, the Food and Drug Administration says it has received nearly 3,000 reports of complications form transvaginal mesh. The agency issued an advisory in July 2011 warning that problems associated with surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse occur frequently, and may expose patients to greater risk.
There were also reports of bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation during insertion, the FDA said, and vaginal scarring and mesh erosion led to decreased quality of life. The FDA recommends that physicians inform patients about the potential for serious complications and their impact on the quality of life.
